I never did like the Unix tradition (but that's for another day...)

Mozilla is now based around something called XP-COM, which is essentially a stripped-down version of COM (no out-of-process servers for example) that works on Windows, MacOS, and Unix. It might be worth looking into.

A lot of other Open Source projects are using CORBA; it remains to be seen whether that will be useful for scripting from scripting languages.
