You get a value like that in Perl when you don't dereference properly. I'm no Perl genius, but I'd bet that the squigglies ('{}') in the second assignment versus the parens in the first assignment is your issue, tests with Perl here (minus the XML and Frontier code) give results that back up that assertion.
