I think the subtext to your message is that any business strategy has to suit its environment. As you say, the pervasive Net changed the rules, and increasingly common Open Source projects will change the rules as well. Any change closes some buisness niches and opens others.

Just the same, this isn't that different from the old days. Today an Open Source announcement may impact your target market, but yesterday an announcement from IBM could have had similar impact.
