Is this standards-competition-FUD, or is there a set of needs which are being met?

XML-RPC seems like it can be leveraged well into relatively proprietary environments. There's so much value to using open formats... as a development group you get to concentrate on the core of your service(s).

For e-commerce and other secure/private/authenticated situations, the XML-EDI working group appears to have suggested a solid architectural starting point: http://w3c.org/ECommerce/Overview-xmledifact

I'm interested to hear what types of here-and-now situations are being addressed with MS's BizTalk and/or HP's eSpeak.

PostScript: Microsoft (or any one group) won't be the only "repository" in the XML-EDI model... the sooner everyone involved perceives the space being defined clearly and with common understandings, the better.
