But many of this things people want to do should not require an army of programmers.

on the other hand, it'll only take a few days for a programmer to provide such tools, once the protocol is published (or the SDK is released, for that matter).

wouldn't be surprised if "ping instant.userland.com" succeeded any day soon ;-)
