In this case Universal wants to both publish its information and have exclusive control over who accesses it. This is poor policy.

Regardless if it's poor policy, it's well within their rights to exert such control. Making a sweeping denial of such rights also denies things like password-protected areas of a web site.

The question is whether that exertion should take the form of technical action (as Dave proposed) or their current legal action.
