I used to work at a small magazine. We were thinking about going online, but worried about impact on the bottom line. The management went to a seminar where the speaker asked how many people had put their pubs online, and whether subscriptions had gone down or up. The unanimous answer: they went up!Technical books? Check out Phil Greenspun's book on building database-backed websites. It seems to be doing well, the second edition is prominently displayed in bookstores, but it's been online fulltext since day one.
