No one has mentioned this, so here goes.

Here are some examples of on-going experiments for "open source" technical books.

Let's ask Bruce Eckel for commentary on this model.

Flexible Java - under development at (http://www.artima.com) is another example. Bill Venners is soliciting feedback as he writes the book. Very interesting.
