or

http://developer.netscape.com/ vs. http://www.netscape.com/

Look at the left hand side of http://www.microsoft.com/

Different audiences, different purposes.

I think many sites go wrong trying to be too many things to too many people. Split the sites by audience and you can write for the right audience without apologies or caveats and a laser focus.
