The expression has been around for a while. How long I'm not sure, but I've heard it all my life and I'm 34. It is only within the past 10-15 years, 20 at the most, that women have commonly been referred to by last name only (as opposed to Miss/Ms./Mrs. Murphy). So must have been a man.
