so few Americans speaking foreign languages that we cannot find one to imitate...

That's so true. There were only a couple of times when I couldn't communicate in English. In those situations hand-waving usually made the difference (with a smile) or you just shrug your shoulders (smile again) and say What the Hell!

We English-speakers have a big advantage in Europe. It doesn't seem fair. C'est la vie.
