Basic vs. Advanced difference

I have a website in a GDB and a traditional discussion group. Pages appear to be indexing and when I search using the Basic search I get results from both the site and the dg. However, when I choose the Advanced search based on htmlInterfaces, I get nothing. What is the key to getting specific site searches?
