I don't know about doing without a separate program. (But then, I didn't know about alt-Print Screen, either.)I use a $50 shareware app called Clip-n-Save. It allows you to choose whether to copy a window, a window's content, the entire screen, or a rectangle. Then you can select File->Save and decide what format to save in. (Unfortunately, it *doesn't* allow you to scale/downsample/antialias/color-reduce the image.)
I think I downloaded it from TUCOWS, but I'm not certain. Anyhow, it does the job for me.
