One place worth a trip, given your current thinking on SOAP, is Maastricht, a quintessential European frontier town. As the guidebook says, it's "a melting-pot for Dutch, French, Belgian and German culture". Fortified against invasion, it's now symbolic of the shift towards greater European integration: one of the most important EU treaties was signed here.
Definitely worth a visit if you're thinking about interoperability in practice!
