Jetspeed is pretty cool and the 1.2 release (coming real soon now) will have tons of improvements. I've been tracking it for a little bit and it is definitely getting there.

One of the nice things about Jetspeed is that it is built on top of Turbine ( http://java.apache.org/turbine ) which just got xml-rpc support so you could add many neat things to your portal.
