To get what you want, you can embed your own player using the SDK, or you can work out a compromise in JScript by telling Windows Media Player to play a song, and polling it to find out if the songs playing.

Waiting before returning entails writing a simple wrapper that polls. Something you can easily do in script or C, and pretty much what a native implementation would do at some level.
