Here are some pointers to articles relating to the Open Scripting Architecture.

This page explains how Frontier can be used to edit and run AppleScripts. The same idea should apply to Python.

The dynamic interface for MacBird plug-ins, which are written in C or C++, and could be GPLed for all anyone would care. (MacBird is licensed under the MIT license.)
