You know it's interesting that the PC world in the 80s totally gravitated to that single-source thing. It made huge markets possible, if everyone got the OS from a single location.

It sure had its disadvantages, because the platform vendor could control what the developers did, but often they stay out of the way.

Also there's a tremendous temptation when the source code for the OS is right down the hall and you're an app developer, and you play Ultimate with one of the guys on the OS development team.
