There's an article in the Palo Alto Weekly from December 11, 1998 that talks about some additional factors that seems to support your own analysis of their location."Masteller said the primary reasons for closing were an increase in rent and the decreasing viability of the California Avenue business district. He said the scarcity of neighboring businesses that are open in the evening limits the bookstore's walk-in traffic."
And they also talk about a lawsuit against Borders and Barnes & Noble for unfair business practices with other independent bookstores.
