The only clue would be that each WDDX structure is known as a packet and the root element is. All other info is wrapped within that. That could be the key to look for when creating a request or parsing a return. I'm also not sure how you would tell the client about a WDDX-aware server. Maybe there is a flag sent back from the server on an initial connection?
I'll keep digging as well.
