If you want to see a discussion about XML-RPC transports and service discovery, check out http://www.roepcke.com/xmlrpc/ . It's an archive (date, author and time indexes) of a discussion that happened a while back about putting XML-RPC into "desktop applications".

The discussion may or may not be useful to you.

I think the gist of the discussion was that while the data format is terse, the transport does not need to be.
