We decided, consciously, for legal and technical reasons, to not actually delete the storage for deleted messages. This comes from years of experience running online communities going back to the late 70s. The date index is total simplicity to maintain from a scripting standpoint, and because the whole environment is in one EXE file we attain performance you simply couldn't get with an external db.
