Indeed, compiling and configuring the kernel is a very trivial undertaking. I think kernel compilation is one of those myths that certain powerusers like to proclaim as "tricky" in order to make themselves seem more apt. Nonsense. Any user should recompile the kernel at least once to understand how very easy it is.
