Mark, I'd discount the "with a single standard format for all news feeds" argument, we'd make the same claim, and it wouldn't be any more true for any of the formats.

One thing that helps is a sample file. I usually get more of an instant insight from that than wading thru specs.

One good idea they have is to also allow stories to be included. I thought of doing that yesterday, and may still approach it. What if you want to put a whole story in an and let the server render it? I can think of times when I'd want to push the story over the wire, not just a link to it.
