But once the browsers implement all the standards, what comes next?Also, there are a lot of things that are deliberately not stndardized, like user interfaces and text editors. I don't think the original version of the Web planned for all browsers to be nothing more than minimal implementations of the standards.
The focus on standards is good, but it isn't a valid reason to stop innovating IMO.
