Are we at a cross-roads? It seems to me that the web (HTML and varients) is increasingly used as the 'universal UI' for applications, instead of a system of publishing hypertext documents. Is it time that someone asked whether to split off the two path completely and have a new kind of free (the reason for the web's popularity) platform (Java anyone?) for providing a GUI and network services? This does sound like thin clients.
