Well the developers of Yahoo Messenger were quoted that the AOL Instant Messenger protocols were actually posted by AOL (I'm not quite sure what they are talking about, but it might be the Mozilla.Org instant messaging API that was posted for a day or two and then removed at the request of Netscape. I have a copy of it.)
