Confused.

i'm confused. is the idea to develop an XML-RPC replacement for SMTP, IMAP, both or neither, something totally new?

it sounds to me like IMAP, in which case you'd want to use a mailserver, not sendmail. i'm not sure you'd want to build a mail server from scratch.

you could get pretty far putting a scripting front-end on IMAP but perfermance might not be acceptable. IMAP gives you pretty decent manipulation of the mailserver.
