Depends on the ecosystem you're working in. SM's system is probably easier to implement on both sides (or at least they have a built-in "professional services" group you pay to make that happen). (It's also probably not as flexible.)

And most big commercial sites that want to add content to their site want the actual content to stay on their site so they can keep their Media Metrix numbers up (and sell ads, and track behavior, etc.). I think the RSS model is a great fit for the non-commercial web.
