Great. Now I have to add Eric Schmidt to my growing list of people who either should know better but don't, or do know better but are cynically misapplying that knowledge for personal gain.

And storing cookies on a server somewhere just reintroduces the problem cookies solved in the first place, namely: how does one store little bits of client-side state?

There are some risks inherent in cookies (read the user-tracking chapter of Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing for specifics), but this mindless blaming of them for every security breach and fraudulent action has got to stop. There's plenty enough casual-user paranoia about cookies as it is.
