Question: how can I prevent the automatic update from overwriting my customizations? Is there an easy way to both get the Userland updates and bugfixes and customize the editor, the message board etc? Or should I just wait for Userland to add the features?

You can't prevent it, so put your scripts somewhere else. In the case of the DG, I have no advice to offer at this time, but when we start implementing a new DG interface we'll do it in a new object database, so our systems will take updates without losing functionality.
