Let me just point out one thing: Most people may indeed be willing to read DaveNet even though it does not use highlighting. If so, this would be because Dave is a far-above-average writer and because the audience is not representative for the average Web users.
Run a study of the average marketing person's writing on the average website which is accessed by average customers who are in a hurry: the scannable text will win.
