The idea of editting in the browser was part of Tim Berners-Lee's original vision for the World Wide Web. His first generation browser supported editting. Sadly, when people started creating the next batch of browsers, they conveniently left that feature out. We've had to suffer for their short sightedness ever since...

An you can read it in his book Weaving the web... very, very good and replace the things at their places. It remembered me my begining with the web 8 years ago. The message is Interoperability and Webnauts are reader AND editors of the web.
