But people don't want a bland generic stable OS, they want flashy advertising, lots of hype and a pretty GUI.

And history repeats itself. The 1988 SunOS worm happened because a known hole was not closed. The 2000 Windows Worm happened because a known hole was not closed. A future worm will happen because a hole was not closed.

Somewhere I was reading about the people talking about the net like a population. A low diveristy means that lots of computers will be inffected by viruses and worms. When this happens, catastrophes are likely to occur, and the diversity will increase.
