Under U.S.A. law, can "journalists" and/or "average people" be compelled to reveal information related to a criminal act?

I'm assuming here (reasonably I hope) that this came out because someone breached their NDA contract.

AFAIK (though I'm no lawyer), violating NDA's aren't criminal offenses; it's a civil matter, like any contractual violation or disagreement.

I would be surprised if any of Apple's lawyers actually believes that they have a legal foot to stand on in a case like this. But Apple has the resources to litigate a website like Macintouch out of existance. They win by attrition, not by basis of law.
