Freenet -- GPL distributed fileserving with anonymity, scalability, and no central servers at all. Also Gnutella, which is less anonymous and probably less scalable but currently working. Probably a lot of software in the earlier days of the net, even before people like Stallman made it official -- bringing up another example, Emacs, which Neal Stephenson says "for a professional writer, outshines all other text editors like the noonday sun outshines the stars."
