I would note that Digital Creations (of Zope fame) are in the same boat. They give away the software, and make money off of the consulting.

In fact, the big advantage for them is that programmers who do NOT work for Digital Creations are improving Zope, and thus improving the DC toolkit.

Imagine that -- you get paid to implement cool solutions, and the world works on giving you better tools.
