Jefferson was instrumental in framing the Constitution, which provided for copyrights and patents. And he was one of the first patent holders.

While this sounds contradictory, it's not. A patent doesn't give anyone ownership of an idea, but rather a temporary, exclusive right to exploit it. Copyright is similar.
