If you assume copying is allowed, then option 3 is essentially Schneier's Street Performer protocol. The artist simply releases the work to the public after $X is deposited to a trust account, and the trust account refunds contributions so far if the work is not released by a deadline.

Just as the tipping model works better for good-looking waitresses, and for waitresses who give better service, I think it would work better for artists who do a good job.

Hmmm...option 6 does sound familiar!
