I've seen this canard repeated over and over ad nauseam. Sufficiently frequently that some uninformed people might start believing it. The problem is that it's not true.

Given that open source software has been around quite a bit longer than Microsoft has, it's clear that the prime mover lies somewhere else. Eric Raymond has (as usual) written well on the subject of motivation in his Homesteading the Noosphere.
