I know that MS is under scrutiny by the DOJ and is likely on their best behavior. I also know that MS has always supported upwards compatibility via conversion but this had the tendency to lock out users of older versions. I also recall that the parity between the Mac and Windows versions of the products had somewhat different file formats that only compounded the problems.
