Choice vs lock-in

More and more the trial in Washington is sounding like a war crimes trial. The war was fought by both sides. Were there actually any war crimes? The government is either missing or ignoring something. The software industry is centered on warfare. Nothing is done for the good of the user or smaller developers. Everything is about money, control of the future and to a lesser extent, beating your opponent.
The breast-beating masks the real issue for users: choice vs lock-in. On that, there is remarkable agreement. Microsoft says we should be locked into their APIs. Sun says we should be locked into theirs.
