XML-RPC and Security

One of Dave's articles today mentioned using XML-RPC to interface between desktop apps and server side data storage. One thing that I don't see specifically addressed in the XML-RPC spec is security.

Can someone outline, in high level terms how one might securely access and update data on a per user basis when the data is exposed via XML-RPC.
