The following works for me:

$ telnet www.dictionary.com 80 Trying 206.117.28.62... Connected to dictionary.com. Escape character is '^]'. GET /cgi-bin/dict.pl?db=wn&term=tonsil HTTP/1.0

And then the page comes out with their definition of tonsil enclosed in and .

I've also tried it with some of the Perl library code and with PHP.

Surely it's not the IP address....
