I feel like I'm rooting around in someone else's closet though when I try to use it - it seems like you have to know already where many elements are in order to use them.

There is a in-progress map to Frontier.root -- it's not a completely finished piece of documentation, and it's not in its permanent home, but it may help let you know how the closet is organized and where to find things.
