Think how ugly and sluggish the user interface to (say) the Director timeline editor would be, if all it could use were somebody's "standard" set of widgets via XML/RPC.

I agree at least at an intuitive and historic level. But watch out, clock rates are expanding at a pretty high rate. I'm amazed at how fast the machines run these days.
