It's a gradual process, and it's not guaranteed. MS knows it, that's why they spend so much effort with developers, carefully managing the transitions from DOS to Win16 to Win32. That's why java tickled them so. (And browser-based apps.)

And you're right about that hard-won knowledge stuff. I have a weakness for DOS. :-/
