Take a look at the bottom of the static page:

Last update: Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at 12:00 AM Hawaiian Standard Time.

That's also the day that is highlighted in the calendar.

I think this might be related to the postTime/lastUpdate modifications you made recently. I will have a closer look at the code in news.root.
