Has anyone been playing around with VNC enough to figure out how to get around firewalls?

That shouldn't be a problem, if the firewall is under your control at any rate. The port numbers used by VNC are known -- if you're using the Java client then you're typing them in the URL -- and you can open up those port numbers in the firewall.
