Found it: mainresponder.news.getTodaysMsgTable.

If anyone's interested in doing the same, I added a pref at [newssitename].["#newsSite"].newsTitle and modified the above script to use it. (It's in a try statement, so if the pref isn't defined it defaults to the usual sitename + " outline for " + date format)
